Air/Ground 1

When the war ended, many of the RAF Stations were sold and the land restored for a return to its former farming purposes. Giant aircraft hangars were sold, dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere. Concrete runways were lifted and broken up to be used as hardcore in the building of roads and in the early development of motorways.

People driving through Lincolnshire today will not be aware that they are passing or driving over a former well known RAF Station. But here comes the surprise - from the air, flying over a former wartime base gives the viewer a unique perspective of its past glory. Despite the extensive extraction of hardcore from the runways and perimeter tracks, the very definite outlines of these features may be seen and appreciated.

Many buildings were left to decay over the years. This old control tower at Wigsley in Nottinghamshire, once the life hub of the station, is now just a home for wildlife.

Since the Second World War, Lincolnshire has been widely and affectionally known as ?Bomber County? because of the many Royal Air Force bomber bases situated throughout the shire. From many of these bases flew the mighty Avro Lancaster.
